Selenium Sulfide Topical
What is selenium sulfide topical?
Selenium sulfide topical is a drug used for treating seborrheic skin conditions in dogs (conditions relating to the oil-producing glands in the skin). It may also be used as a secondary treatment for Malassezia (yeast) skin conditions, especially if the dog has waxy, greasy, or scaly skin.
There are no licensed veterinary versions of selenium sulfide topical. Human formulations (Selsun Blue®, Tersi®, generic) may be prescribed for off-label use.
Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off-label use in veterinary medicine. “Off label” means the drug is being used in a way that has not been reviewed or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Health Canada. In these instances, follow your veterinarian’s directions and cautions carefully, as they may be significantly different from those on the label.
How do I give my pet selenium sulfide topical?
- Selenium sulfide topical is used on the skin, and comes in the form of shampoo, lotion, or foam.
- Allow the medicated product to remain on the skin for 10 minutes before rinsing.
- Rinse thoroughly to prevent irritation and drying of the skin, as well as hair discoloration.
- Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Different strengths of this medication are commercially available. Be sure to follow your veterinarian’s instructions for use.
- Wear gloves when applying this product. Selenium sulfide topical can damage or discolor jewelry.
This medication should take effect after several uses, and improvement in clinical signs should follow, although it may take 4–6 weeks for full effect.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
If you miss a treatment, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled treatment, skip the missed treatment and resume the regular schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.
Are there any potential side effects from selenium sulfide topical?
Selenium sulfide topical may cause the following side effects:
- Skin irritation, especially to the scrotal area
- Hair staining or discoloration
- Excessive drying of skin
- Gastrointestinal signs, such as drooling, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting if ingested orally
Serious adverse reactions may occur if ingested orally. If any of the following signs develop, stop using selenium sulfide topical and contact your veterinarian immediately:
- Neurological signs, such as tremors or unsteadiness (may occur if large amounts are ingested orally)
Drug sensitivities can develop over time, with repeated exposure. Your pet may have no reaction after the first few doses but may develop a sensitivity later. It is important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction over the entire course of the treatment and notify your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. This moderate-acting medication should stop working within 3–4 days, although effects can be longer in animals with liver or kidney disease.
Are there any risk factors for this medication?
DO NOT USE selenium sulfide topical in:
- Cats (they have a high likelihood of adverse reactions through grooming)
- Pets with open wounds or inflamed skin
- Pets with an allergy to this medication
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
There are no known drug interactions for selenium sulfide topical. Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking before starting any new treatment.
Is any monitoring needed with this medication?
- At home, monitor for any side effects such as those noted above. If any occur, stop using the medication and contact your veterinarian.
- Your veterinarian will let you know when and how they want to reassess your pet to ensure the medication is working and not causing side effects.
How do I store selenium sulfide topical?
